I expect search terms including the word ‘birthday’ will creep higher up the chart and reach a peak in July along with anniversary gifts and the terms containing ‘christening’ will fade away.

Valentines Gifts for Him

Another obvious search term indicating that women are keener earlier. Why? Well the search term ‘Valentines Gifts for Her’ only just makes it into the top 25 gift search terms at number 24.

Personalized Gifts

Can you Spell? Personalized as in ‘personalized gifts’ again out performs ‘personalised’ with an ‘s’ but it’s not easy to understand why? A quick search to compare the two words under Google UK returns 11.1 million indexed pages for the ‘s’ spelling and only 913,000 pages for the ‘z’ version. Is it simply people can’t spell or don’t care?

Wedding Anniversary Gifts

The search term ‘wedding anniversary gifts by year’ is very specific and very surprising to have so high up in our gift terms. One of our Web sites. www.gonedigging.co.uk has a very neat breakdown of the milestone anniversaries and appropriate gifts. We know from experience that the 1st Anniversary, ‘Paper’ is very popular with visitors enjoying the unique original newspaper gift box. The original newspaper is also a best seller for the 40th anniversary, Ruby.

With Christmas terms dominating search in December it is interesting to see how certain terms leap up the index as Christmas approaches.

Can we deduce something we already know from this chart? Men look for gifts rather late in the day; ‘Gifts for Her’ leaps from number 7 to number 2 in the final weeks.

Secret Santa Rising. Does you office participate in Secret Santa? More and more businesses encourage their workers to make Christmas a fun event in the office and they all do their Secret Santa as near the Christmas break as possible hence the sudden surge up the chart.

Gifts for Men Who Have Everything. This is the longest Key Word term in the top 100 terms, at number 48, and smacks slightly of desperation! There must be a lot of woman searching for a gift for their man and not knowing where to start. I would think they go on to narrow their search to gadget type sites.

Personalized Gifts with a ‘Z’  We know that certain sites specialise in certain gift types, like GoneDigging for personalised gifts but what is surprising is the spelling with the ‘z’ version being higher than the ‘s’ version (this is UK only data).

Christmas Gifts for Her. Interesting that this term also shoots up in the final days before the big event.

What We Say “Over 76% of these Key Word searches are 2 or 3 words and 15% are 4 words or more; so the majority of searches are for general terms allied with Christmas with 4 word terms growing as searchers define what they are looking for as they prepare to buy.”

What’s interesting this month is how many of the key gift search terms remain the same and I think an indication that searchers are still in the research phase hence the rise of ‘Christmas Gift Ideas’ to second place.

One of my least favourite words of all time ‘xmas’ is on the rise coming in at number 15 and what I find curious is how high ‘christening’ gifts at this time of year (number 22).

Secret Santa

Secret Santa is a recent phenomenon and rising up the charts and into the top 20. Office around the country have now turned this idea into a Christmas tradition. We’ve recently seen gift merchants even adopting secret Santa gifts into their web site categories.

Cheap Christmas Gifts - I’m heartened to see this term is well down the list at 93. People are still spending this Christmas, especially on personalised gift sites like GoneDigging and Historic Newspapers.

Gifts for Her and Him – The split between the sexes remains the same with women searching more than their men-folk. I’d like to think that’s because the men-folk have already done their Christmas shopping but I know it ‘ain’t so…’

I was surprised by the high entry for ‘Gifts for Her’ we don’t usually see this term so high up in the search engines in October.

Personalized Gifts – Personalized with a ‘z’ made its first entry last month and it is unusual to see a (perceived US) spelling so high up the charts. This may be down to a particular advertiser or bad spelling (this Top Ten is based on UK search terms only).

Christmas Ideas – I would say this term indicates that searchers are not looking to buy and most likely looking for good deals so expect voucher code sites and cashback sites to soak up some of this early-bird traffic.

Gifts for Her – It’s heartening to see that men are looking to buy this early.

Christmas Cards – Cards are still not featuring; are people leaving it too late?

Bubbling Under

Christening gifts and unusual gifts are bubbling under this month and I bet will reappear in the Top 10 in January.

The wedding season and therefore the anniversary season is now making way for more general traffic. Christmas is on the horizon and terms around the season will be bursting into the top 10 in mid October; perhaps even sooner. Have a lok at some unique and unusual gifts.

Christening Gifts are still a popular search term and we would expect to stay in the top 10 for a few more weeks.

Gifts for Men

Are we seeing the start of women buying for men for Christmas? The term – Gifts for men will most likely morph into Christmas Gifts for Men or even combine into Unusual Christmas Gifts for Men.

Birthday Gifts

I would expect this to drop out of the top 10 next week and more Christmassy terms are more to the fore.

Christmas Cards

Another term we expected to be in the top 10 sooner rather than later with site visitors expected to spread the cost of Christmas earlier by buying their Christmas cards ahead of time.

Another interesting search term is ‘gift aid’ which is bubbling under at number thirteen in July. Milestone birthdays also feature in the top forty. In this order 21st , 60th, and 40th. In anniversaries Ruby Anniversaries appear well ahead of Silver Anniversaries.

Bridesmaid Gifts

We’ve seen in the past a woeful tendency for people to search for Cheap Gifts! This month this search is way down at number one hundred and forty (it does tend to head up the chart in Valentine season) and people are now more likely to put a descriptive word on their searches like ‘cool gifts’ or ‘unusual gift ideas.’
